Hi, I'm Tanja.
Madeira is my home.

There are places that ask something of you. Madeira is one of them. Mountains plunging into the Atlantic. Levada paths disappearing into cloud. Clifftops where the ocean stretches blue and endless to the horizon. The scent of eucalyptus and sea salt in the air, and a pace of life that feels – finally – like the right one.

I heard that call. I came to Madeira with my two children, a self-built van, and the deep conviction that life could be lived differently. What I created here – FortunaVanTours – is less a service than an invitation: to stop watching the island from a hotel balcony and actually step into it.

My guests describe it as unforgettable. Again and again. That doesn't happen by accident.

Beyond the van, I am a Sifu – a master instructor in Kung Fu and Wu Taiji. I lead nature retreats and drum journeys on Madeira, weaving movement, stillness and wild landscape into experiences that stay with you long after you've left the island. If you feel called to go deeper, that door is open.

Frequently asked questions

The Fortuna Van comes fully equipped: bed with linen, kitchenette with gas hob and fridge, cooking basics (oil, spices, coffee), solar power and a water tank. Before your departure you receive curated QR-code route maps via WhatsApp, handpicked insider spots that are exclusively shared with our guests. During your trip our WhatsApp support channel is open around the clock.

Pick up and return take place in Madalena do Mar, Madeira, and only there. We do not deliver the van and there is no airport pick up. At handover you get a full walk-through of everything on board, your route maps, and all the tips you need for the road, so you can set off relaxed and well prepared. Getting there from the airport: take a taxi or Bolt. Our tip: plan your Bolt ride in advance in the Bolt app, especially if you arrive early, late or at night.

A standard category B car licence is sufficient. Drivers must be at least 25 years old and have held their licence for a minimum of 2 years. Some experience with larger vehicles is helpful, Madeira's mountain roads can be narrow and winding.

The minimum tour duration is 3 nights. The longer your tour, the lower your price per night: the rate steps down at 7, 10 and 14 nights. Madeira rewards those who take their time – the island reveals itself slowly.

The van has third party liability insurance and glass damage cover. There is no comprehensive insurance. If you follow the agreement and report any incident properly, your liability is normally limited to €1,000 per incident. Your personal belongings are not insured, so we recommend your own travel insurance.

The security deposit is always €1,000 and is due at handover. Without the deposit we cannot hand over the keys. If everything is in order when you return the van, you get the deposit back immediately, the same way you paid it. If there is damage, we keep the deposit until the repair is done and the final invoice is in. The remaining amount is refunded within 7 calendar days of the last invoice. Time spent organising the repair, for example workshop visits and driving the van there, is charged at €25 per hour and deducted from the deposit. We do not name a fixed time frame for the repair itself.

Our curated route maps include handpicked overnight spots, places that are legal, scenic, and known to us from personal experience. Wild camping is not permitted on Madeira. These insider locations are exclusively shared with our guests and are one of the highlights of the FortunaVanTours experience.

You can cancel any time in writing (e-mail or WhatsApp). 30 days or more before the start: full refund minus a €50 administration fee. 15 to 29 days before the start: 50 % refund. 7 to 14 days before the start: 25 % refund. Less than 7 days before the start: no refund. If you cannot travel for reasons beyond your control, for example a cancelled flight or serious illness, we offer a free date change. A refund in such a case is at our discretion. We understand that plans change, just get in touch via WhatsApp and we will find a solution together.

The van is handed over with a full tank and must come back with a full tank. Missing fuel is charged at the pump price plus a €15 service fee. Please return the van reasonably clean. If it comes back unclean, a cleaning fee of €45 applies. Bed linen, pillows, a blanket and a towel set per person are included. A second driver is €25 per tour. One named driver in place of the booking guest is free of charge.

Write to us on WhatsApp straight away and we will do everything to solve it quickly. Small issues that are solved the same day do not give a claim. If the van is unusable for more than 24 hours because of a defect you did not cause, you get the daily rate back for every full day.
